William Speirs Bruce was born in London of Scottish parents in 1867. He was educated at Norfolk County School, England and enrolled as a medical student at the University of Edinburgh, where renowned Scottish physicists, chemists and oceanographers supervised him. In the winter of 1913 Louis Gain wrote to the polar explorer William Speirs Bruce regarding the ornithological specimens collected during the Scottish National Antarctic Expedition, 1902-1904. Bruce led this expedition, which carried out a broad scientific programme. Gain was at this point working for the Museum D'Histore Naturelle in France.
